Copperfield College Kings Park best on public transport in the west

Added: 8 May 2012

Copperfield College Kings Park has taken out the west qualifying heat of the Great Transport Race, proving that when it comes to public transport, they know best.

Twenty nine teams from schools in Melbourne’s west went head-to-head today in a race around their local area on public transport. Five teams gained a coveted place in the Great Transport Race grand final which will be held at Federation Square on Tuesday 22 May.

Felecia Chen, Copperfield College Kings Park team captain, was over the moon with the win and can’t wait to take on the grand final.

“We used great team work and communication to win the race today. The PTV iPhone app and Melways helped us plan our journey on public transport and get to many of the pit stops.”

The top five teams that will represent the west in the grand final are:

First place: Copperfield College Kings Park
Second place: Penleigh & Essendon Grammar School
Third place: Rosehill Secondary College
Fourth place: Manor Lakes College
Fifth place: Altona P-9 College

Public Transport Victoria Director of Communication Matt Phelan said the Great Transport Race shows students how easy it is to catch public transport to places in their local area.

“While brushing up on geography skills, students learn safe and independent travel on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses. We hope that participants will now use public transport to more places in their community and continue to gain confidence in using Melbourne’s extensive public transport network.”

Teams were challenged to visit 20 pit stops as far reaching as the Footscray Community Arts Centre, Ascot Vale Skate Park and Highpoint Shopping Centre, to the Flemington Community Centre and Essendon Tram Depot. Completing fun activities along the way, teams gained point bonuses as they raced against the clock.

Two heats have been in Melbourne’s north and east, with another heat in the south taking place in the coming week before the CBD-based final on 22 May. The Great Transport Race is open to all Victorian secondary school students in years 7 – 10.
