December 2017 performance results published

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) today published performance results for December 2017.

  • Metro delivered 91.6 per cent of services on-time in December.
  • Yarra Trams delivered  80.7 per cent of services on-time in December.
  • V/Line delivered 83.0 per cent of services on-time in December.

PTV CEO Jeroen Weimar said both Yarra Trams and Metro need to improve their overall service punctuality if they are to achieve  the tougher benchmarks in their new contracts which came into effect from 30 November.

“We’ve raised the bar in the new contracts with our train and tram operators to deliver a better travel experience for our passengers.

“After the first full month of the new contracts, both operators still need to lift their game.”

December was a difficult month for the operators with the tragic Flinders Street pedestrian incident and extreme  weather events bringing thunderstorms, flooding  and hot temperatures.

“We acknowledge there are factors the operators cannot control, but we still require answers as to what  they are going to do to improve future performance,” said Mr Weimar.

Under the new contracts Metro can face performance penalties of up to $1.25 million each month, and for Yarra Trams up to $500,000.  Whether penalties apply for December will be determined over the coming weeks.  

Metro’s result of 91.6 per cent of train services running on time, would have met their target of 88 per cent punctuality under the previous contract but falls marginally short of the higher 92 per cent target in the new contract. 

At 80.6 per cent, Yarra Trams also fell short of achieving their new punctuality target which increased from 77 per cent to 82 per cent in the new contract.

In December passengers benefitted from  free travel days on Victoria’s public transport network on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, including extra trams and more than 540 extra late night train services on New Year’s Eve, to help people safely welcome in 2018.

On the Regional network, V/Line services saw 83 per cent of services running on time across the network with improvements on the Bendigo and Seymour lines.

“In 2017 we saw V/Line run more regional services than ever before, more than 50 regional crossings upgraded, and more VLocity carriages added to the busiest services,” Mr Weimar said.

“Our aim in 2018 and beyond is to continue improving every line on our regional network, with the $1.57 billion Regional Rail Revival set to fast track giving regional Victorians the services they deserve.”
