Free travel and extra services for ANZAC day

Added: 21 April 2017

Extra early morning train and tram services, in addition to free travel for Veterans and War Widows will help Victorians get to the Shrine of Remembrance before 6 am for the Dawn Service this ANZAC Day.

PTV CEO Jeroen Weimar said 30 additional metropolitan train services will run across all lines from 3:51 am, with trams running to a five minute frequency between 3:47am and 4:51am.

“Public transport is the best way to get to the Shrine of Remembrance, with extra trains and trams operating to make sure everyone can get to the Dawn Service this ANZAC Day,” Mr Weimar said.

Free travel for veterans and war widows is being provided on the Victorian public transport network on 24, 25 and 26 April 2017, to enable them to attend ANZAC Day commemorative activities across the public holiday.

“Public transport will be free for veterans, war widows, scouts and students, making it easier for as many people as possible to take part in this important day of remembrance,” Mr Weimar said.

“With extra services and free travel for veterans and war widows, we’re making it easier than ever to get to the Shrine of Remembrance so more Victorians can take part in the ANZAC Day commemorations.”

On ANZAC Day itself, free travel on the Victorian public transport network is available to members of the Australian Defence Force, Scouts, Guides and school students.

Public Transport Victoria is also providing free shuttle bus services to the Shrine of Remembrance, from selected RSLs and locations across Melbourne.

In order to be eligible for free travel, veterans and war widows must carry their Department of Veteran’s Affairs Gold Card, or Category “V” Victorian Public Transport Concession Card.

Veterans and War Widows can also wear their uniform - including any service medals, or their ex-service association or returned from active service or war widows badge -  to demonstrate their eligibility for free travel.

For all other passengers, travel across Zones 1 & 2 is capped at $6 for full fare and $3 for concession fare passengers on ANZAC Day.
