Great Transport Race to set pace in Melbourne’s east

Added: 23 April 2012

Local students are gearing up for an action packed adventure across Melbourne’s east as they compete in the Great Transport Race qualifying heat on Thursday 3 May.

Racing against schools from across the east, students set out from the Box Hill Town Hall, catch public transport to secret pit stops and take on challenges to earn time bonuses. It’s just like the Amazing Race in your neighbourhood. Eighteen schools and more than 135 students are participating in the east heat this year.

Some great prizes are up for grabs for grand final winners, including a $2000 cheque for the winning school and various vouchers for students.

Schools set to compete in the eastern heat are:

Box Hill High School Koonung Secondary College
Blackburn High School Kurnai College Morwell
Canterbury Girls Secondary College Lakeside Lutheran College
Camberwell Girls Grammar School Marcellin College
Emerald Secondary College St Catherine's School
Emmaus College Yarra Hills Secondary College
Forest Hill College Waverly Christian College
John Monash Science School Xavier College

Public Transport Victoria Director of Communications Matt Phelan said the Great Transport Race was a great opportunity for students to learn how easy it is to catch public transport to places in their local area.

“The race is a great opportunity for students to get out of the classroom and puts their learning into real-life practice. This year more than 540 year 7 – 10 students will use map reading and navigational skills to race around Melbourne on public transport against schools from across Victoria. While brushing up on geography skills, students learn safe and independent travel on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses.”

To get the winning edge, students should start studying public transport routes in the area and use the Public Transport Victoria journey planner to set practice trips. Four qualifying heats will be held in Melbourne’s north, south, east and west, with the top five teams from each moving on to the grand final in the city on Tuesday 22 May.

The Great Transport Race is a fun and engaging experience that helps students learn the ins and outs of Melbourne’s extensive public transport network and is open to Victorian secondary school students in years 7-10. For information visit
