Key improvements deliver results for train passengers

Melbourne is running a record number of train services, with a leap in patronage, reduced crowding and increased customer satisfaction.
Public Transport Victoria (PTV) Chair and CEO Ian Dobbs said that the strong growth in travel on Melbourne's trains over the past decade reached a new high in the patronage results for the September 2013 quarter.
“For the first time, 60 million passengers were carried in a single quarter; more than 800,000 each weekday,” said Mr Dobbs.
“This was an increase of 3 million compared to the June quarter, during Melbourne's winter when there is generally a dip in train travel.
“Strong patronage growth mirrors much improved train service delivery with 93.5% of trains running on time in the September 2013 quarter, the best delivery in more than a decade.”
Mr Dobbs said that importantly the growth in patronage was not resulting in increased crowding on trains.
“Despite this strong patronage growth, the extra 1,078 train services each week introduced in the past three years means that many train services are less crowded than they have been in more than a decade,” he said.
The performance improvements, combined with infrastructure projects delivered such as the Sunbury Electrification Project and the new Williams Landing Station, are resulting in increased customer satisfaction with the train network.
Overall satisfaction for metropolitan trains continues to trend upwards, with the September quarter recording the highest quarterly figure (68.7) in the recent history of the report.
This result is due to increased satisfaction with running of services, following on from recent performance improvements, and a significant increase in satisfaction with myki ticketing.
