Major works to bring Sunbury electrification closer

Added: 16 July 2012

Around the clock works over a nine-day period will help bring the electrification of the Sunbury line a step closer to completion, Public Transport Victoria’s Director Network Operations Norman Gray said today.

The Bendigo and Echuca lines will be closed for the full nine days between 27 July and 6 August, with Sydenham line services between Watergardens and St Albans stations only affected on weekends.

“The Sunbury Electrification Project is now rounding the final bend in construction and will be on the home straight following this period of major commissioning and testing works,” Mr Gray said.

“With crews working to finish the installation and testing of new electrical and signalling equipment, they need a clear period without trains running on the line.

“These nine days will give the project team the unrestricted access to the rail line they need to get the bulk of the remaining work done and pave the way for Metro trains to start running on the Sunbury line,” Mr Gray said.

With the upgraded Sunbury and Diggers Rest stations having been opened to commuters in May this year, Mr Gray said locals are eager to know when the more frequent Metro trains will come into operation.

“We have already achieved impressive milestones including the opening of the 550-space car park at Diggers Rest.

“These works will help complete the less visible, but crucial elements of the project, including overhead wiring, power and signalling systems.

Mr Gray said it was expected this would be the last major disruption to the Sunbury line as part of the project and said electrification would have long-term benefits for the area.

“Sunbury line passengers will ultimately enjoy double the number of services on weekdays and weekends, with direct access to the city loop.

“Removing the need to interchange at North Melbourne will save many commuters precious time in getting to and from work.

“More services, beginning earlier in the morning and running later at night, will give thousands of people better access to our public transport network,” Mr Gray said.

V/Line will also undertake works on the Echuca line during this time.

Buses will replace all V/Line services between Bendigo / Echuca and Melbourne from 10pm on Friday 27 July to the last train on Sunday 5 August.

Buses will replace Metro services between Watergardens and St Albans stations from 10pm on Friday 27 July to the last train on Sunday 29 July, and from 10pm on Friday 3 August to the last train on Sunday 5 August.

Trains will continue to operate between St Albans and Flinders Street on these days and weekday services will not be affected.

Further details of the disruption and bus replacement timetables will be available closer to the date and information available online at vline.com.au (V/Line) or ptv.vic.gov.au (Metro) or by phone on 1800 800 007.
