March 2018 performance results published

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) today published performance results for March 2018.
- Metro delivered 91.2 per cent of services on-time in March.
- Yarra Trams delivered 78.7 per cent of services on-time in March.
- V/Line delivered 81.1 per cent of services on-time in March.
Acting PTV CEO Alan Fedda said Metro and Yarra Trams both met their targets for reliability, but failed to meet their punctuality targets during what is historically public transport’s busiest month of the year.
“March is a huge month for our network with thousands of extra services to support major events such as the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix and the start of the AFL Premiership season,” said Mr Fedda.
“Last month saw 4 million extra trips taken on our public transport network when compared with February, with Yarra Trams running 11,000 tram services to get fans to and from the Grand Prix,” said Mr Fedda.
At 98.9 per cent, Yarra Trams posted their best reliability figures in more than 12 months, but with a 78.7 per cent punctuality result, were below the 82 per cent target.
“Despite a busy month, we are still looking to our operators to ensure services run to time so that passengers can rely on public transport to get them where they need to go,” said Mr Fedda. “This is why we introduced stronger targets for punctuality in the new contracts.”
During March, Metro delivered 91.2 per cent of train services on time which was an improvement on the same month in 2017, but just short of the higher 92 per cent punctuality target brought in through the new contracts.
“March also saw the start of a six-week construction blitz across Melbourne to remove four more level crossings, duplicate the Hurstbridge Line, prepare for new high capacity metro trains and progress work on the Metro Tunnel,” said Mr Fedda.
“These major infrastructure works will increase the capacity of the network, drive longer term punctuality improvements and enable us to run more trains more often.”
On the regional network, V/Line recorded their strongest reliability result this year with 97 per cent of services delivered, exceeding the 96 per cent target.
V/Line’s overall punctuality for March was 81.7 per cent, which despite being higher than the same month in 2017, was still below the target of 92 per cent.
“V/Line faced some challenges during March with fires in the state’s south west and disruptions in the east due to important upgrade works,” said Mr Fedda.
“Despite this, they were able to deliver better reliability on a number of lines and punctuality on the Geelong line was at its highest since November last year.”
