Metropolitan train and tram franchise agreements
Added: 29 September 2016
Public Transport Victoria has issued Metro Trains and Yarra Trams with a Request for Proposal to operate the train and tram networks, respectively, for a seven-year period.
Current agreements with Metro Trains and Yarra Trams come to an end in November 2017.
Having satisfied necessary conditions in their current contracts, the Victorian Government is now entering into exclusive good faith negotiations with the two operators.
In negotiating the new contracts, the Victorian Government has asked Metro Trains and Yarra Trams to demonstrate how they will operate a transport system that not only meets the needs of Melbourne’s growing population, is consistent with international best-practice, but importantly, adopts a culture of safety and service delivery and puts passengers first.
Operators are requested to submit their formal proposals by the end of the year.
This submission process will be followed by a period of negotiations that are expected to have concluded by the middle of 2017.
If negotiations with the operators do not meet the Victorian Government’s expectations for delivering better outcomes for passengers, alternative options will be considered.
