Metropolitan train and tram improvement works this weekend

Added: 22 October 2015

Improvement works across Melbourne’s train and tram network are being carried out this weekend, as part of a multi-billion dollar investment and upgrade program on Melbourne’s public transport system.

Works on the $222.9 million removal of Main Road level crossing will see buses replacing trains for Metro services between Sunbury and Sunshine, while V/Line’s Bendigo services will operate as road coaches between Sunbury and Southern Cross. Swan Hill services will operate as a road coach between Southern Cross and Bendigo.

Metro will also undertake signalling upgrades on sections of the Frankston, Alamein, Belgrave, Lilydale and Glen Waverley lines. Buses will replace trains between all stations while works are carried out.

Track renewal works on Routes 70, 75 and the City Circle trams will result in service alterations between Saturday and the last service on Monday. Trams on these Routes will operate with an ‘a’ alongside their route number to reflect the changes.

PTV Director of Performance and Contract Management Jeroen Weimar said these works are important to ensure Victoria’s public transport system continues to grow with demand.

“The State Government is investing in major projects to transform our public transport system, including the Level Crossing Removal Project and Melbourne Metro Rail Project,” Mr Weimar said.

“In addition to these transformational projects, maintenance works, new trains and trams, and signalling upgrades help us improve the reliability of the network."

PTV, in conjunction with V/Line, Metro and Yarra Trams, is communicating with customers extensively to ensure they are aware of the works through advertisements, posters at stations, social media and the websites.

“These works have been scheduled to minimise disruptions for customers, particularly leading up to the busy Melbourne Cup carnival,“ Mr Weimar said.

“With a number of events taking place in Melbourne this weekend, I urge all customers to plan their journey ahead of time and allow additional travel time.

“We appreciate the patience of passengers this weekend to help us improve the network.”

  • Alamein line – Parliament to Alamein (Saturday and Sunday)
