New accessible tram stop for Route 1 and 8 passengers

Added: 29 January 2015

Tram passengers on Routes 1 and 8 will soon enjoy a brand new platform stop on Elgin Street, as part of an important infrastructure project delivered by Yarra Trams on behalf of Public Transport Victoria.

The new centre island platform stop between Swanston and Lygon streets will provide passengers with easy access to low-floor trams, safer and faster boarding, tramTRACKERTM passenger information displays, seating, shelters and new pedestrian signals.

Yarra Trams will simultaneously renew the tram tracks on Elgin Street between Swanston and Lygon streets to eliminate the need for future disruptions in the area.

Work to build the new platform stop will start late on Friday 30 January and continue 24 hours a day until 5am on Saturday 7 February 2015.

Once complete the new platform stop will be known as Stop 112 Elgin Street & Lygon Street, and will replace the two existing tram stops on Elgin Street on the corners of Swanston Street and Lygon Street.

The track work will improve safety for everyone, deliver a better road surface for motorists, cyclists and tram passengers, and less noise due to potholes, broken rails and wheel squealing.
