New travelling to university guides now available

Added: 13 August 2012

Public Transport Victoria is making travel to university easy for students across Victoria with the launch of 12 new travelling to university campus specific guides.

These online guides, available from ptv.vic.gov.au, provide students with information on the closest train station, tram stop or bus route to campus, as well as information on student concessions, ticketing, journey planning, public transport mobile apps and a map.

Public Transport Victoria Director of Communications Matt Phelan said that universities across Melbourne are well serviced by trains, trams and buses, making public transport an efficient and cost effective way for students to travel to class.

“With scores of secondary school students attending university open days this month, these comprehensive online guides provide future and current university students with everything they need to know about getting to university on public transport, including important information on student concessions.”

“Many university students are eligible for a Victorian Public Transport Student Concession Card, which allows them to buy a concession myki and travel on concession fares, reducing the cost of public transport by half,” said Mr Phelan.

Recent improvements to public transport services, such as the high frequency university bus connection routes 401 (connecting North Melbourne Station with Melbourne University) and 601 (connecting Huntingdale Station with Monash University) means that more university students than ever are already choosing to travel by public transport.

“In 2011, around 39,000 passengers used the Route 401 service to Melbourne University each week, and there are now up to 22,000 passengers using the Route 601 service to Monash University.

“One in five train journeys and one in 10 tram journeys are also made for university education.

“These figures show that our focus on public transport planning is delivering results and improving public transport connections for students,” Mr Phelan said.
