Quarterly Track Record Report Released

The latest quarterly report into Victoria’s public transport performance shows satisfaction with Melbourne’s train network continues to grow as Metro records its best results for punctuality.

Public Transport Victoria Director of Operations, Norman Gray said the latest Track Record report highlighted Metro’s improved performance.

“PTV has worked with Metro to help rebuild their timetable and focus maintenance where it is needed to improve performance and reliability,” Mr Gray said.

The July to September 2012 Track Record report shows Metro met their punctuality targets for 92.6 per cent of services during the three month period.

This is the highest figure on the network in over eight years.

It is also more than two per cent higher than the same time last year and more than five per cent higher than two years ago.

“Both PTV and Metro are committed to further improving services for public transport users,” Mr Gray said.

Punctuality for Yarra Trams during this period remained relatively steady at 82.3 per cent for the quarter, compared to 82.6 per cent for the same period last year.

V/Line punctuality was down on the same period last year, dropping from 88.4 per cent to 85.6 per cent.

Metropolitan bus punctuality remained relatively steady, rising from 94.3 per cent in the September 2011 quarter, to 94.6 per cent this year.

Both Metro and Yarra Trams received performance bonuses in the quarter. Metro’s incentive payment of $3.244 million is its highest ever bonus, Yarra Trams received a $224,000 payment, while V/Line incurred a penalty of $1.323 million.

“Our contracts with the operators are built to incentivise good performance and make it in everyone’s interest to have punctual, reliable public transport,” Mr Gray said.

Satisfaction results from the Customer Satisfaction Monitor show an improvement in attitudes to the public transport network, the result up from 61.9 index points in the September 2011 quarter to 63.6.

Metro recorded its highest result of 68.0 index points, compared to 66.0 at the same time last year. Satisfaction with both Yarra Trams and metropolitan buses remained steady against one year ago.

One of the key findings of the satisfaction report is a 3.6 point increase - from a score of 63.6 last quarter to 67.2 - in satisfaction with personal security on metropolitan trains.

It comes as the Victorian Government through Victoria Police continues to recruit, train and deploy Protective Services Officers (PSOs) at metropolitan and four major regional train stations every night from 6pm until the last train.

Currently there are more than 190 PSOs deployed at 24 stations across the network.

“While the rollout is still in its early stages, these are encouraging signs that people are welcoming the presence of PSOs,” Mr Gray said.
