Tram works down the line for Elizabeth Street
Added: 23 February 2017
Passengers should prepare for service changes on Elizabeth Street between Flinders Street and La Trobe Street this weekend until Wednesday morning while Yarra Trams conducts vital track renewal work.
During the works there will be no trams on Elizabeth Street between Stop 5 Melbourne Central Station and the terminus at Flinders Street Station on Routes 19, 57 and 59.
Works will commence at 2am on Saturday, 25 February around the clock until services resume at 5am on Wednesday, 1 March 2017.
Passengers travelling to and from Flinders Street Station via Routes 19, 57 and 59 can transfer to a City Loop train service at Melbourne Central Station.
Public Transport Victoria Acting Executive Director, Network Service Delivery Dean Purkis advised passengers to plan ahead when travelling to or from the CBD on Routes 19, 57 and 59.
“The best way to plan ahead is to visit the PTV website to find out the best way for you to get to your destination,” Mr Purkis said.
“With Routes 19, 57 and 59 terminating early at Melbourne Central Station while works are carried out on Elizabeth Street it may be easier to take a City Loop train service onwards to Flinders Street.”
Passengers can also connect to Route 55 at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Haymarket or Victoria Street to access the city via William Street.
The tram works will allow the renewal of tracks and overhead wiring along the busy Elizabeth Street corridor to ensure a more reliable, safe and comfortable service to passengers.
The works will be delivered as part of Yarra Trams’ $65 million annual tram network maintenance carried out on behalf of PTV.
Yarra Trams Executive Director Technical Delivery, Rob Robson said the infrastructure upgrade is crucial to the efficient operation of the tram network.
“We’ve worked closely with VicRoads and the City of Melbourne to schedule this project at a time that will minimise disruption to the local community as much as possible,” Mr Robson said.
Customers are advised to visit Live Travel Updates to check specific service changes on their route and plan ahead.
