Tram works on track for Swanston & Collins Streets

Passengers should prepare for service changes on Swanston St and Collins St this weekend until Tuesday morning while Yarra Trams renews tracks on the world’s busiest tram corridor.
During the works there will be no trams on Swanston Street between Melbourne Central and City Square and no trams on Collins Street between Exhibition Street and Elizabeth Street.
Passengers are advised to either walk between City Square and Melbourne Central or take City Loop train services between Flinders Street Station and Melbourne Central Station.
Public Transport Victoria Acting Executive Director, Performance and Contract Management, Warwick Horsley advised customers to plan ahead when travelling on any Swanston Street or Collins Street tram routes.
“Passengers are advised to visit the ptv.vic.gov.au to check how service alterations may impact their journey with different arrangements in place for a number of routes,” Mr Horsley said.
The following tram routes will be affected from 1:30am on Saturday, 26 November until 5am Tuesday, 29 November:
Routes 1, 3, 3a, 5, 6, 8, 16, 64, 67 and 72 will be affected from 1:30am on Saturday, 26 November with services returning on Tuesday, 29 November.
Routes 11, 12, 48 and 109 will be affected on Collins Street from 3am on Saturday, 26 November with services returning on Tuesday, 29 November.
Mr Horsley said the works on Swanston Street would renew track infrastructure and provide a better service to passengers.
“The intersection of Collins and Swanston streets is one of the world’s busiest tram intersections with more than 180 trams passing through between 8am and 9am on weekdays, these works will allow trams to run a more reliable and comfortable service,” Mr Horsley.
“Maintenance is crucial to running a world class tram network that keeps customers moving and minimises unplanned disruptions, and we appreciate the patience of our customers as we deliver these upgrades.”
Yarra Trams Executive Director Technical Delivery, Rob Robson said the infrastructure upgrade is crucial to the efficient operation of the tram network.
“We’ve worked closely with the City of Melbourne to schedule this project at a time that will minimise disruption to the local community as much as possible,” Mr Robson said.
