A new bus network for Gisborne
In December 2024, we introduced a more flexible bus network in Gisborne with more services and improved coverage of new estates and more schools.
Routes 473 and 474 became routes 73 and 74, and formed a new two-way bus loop around Gisborne. Routes 73 and 74 run to a timetable and passengers can catch a bus in either direction without pre-booking.
A dedicated pre-booked Route 77 service travels between Bullengarook and Gisborne Station via the town centre with more services throughout the day and on weekends.
To plan your journey:
- Download the PTV app
- Use the journey planner
- Check the Route 73 timetable, the Route 74 timetable, the Route 77 timetable
- or call 1800 800 007.
All passengers can purchase paper tickets on the bus with the driver using cash or card for single trips or a daily, weekly, or monthly pass.
Passengers transferring to or from a V/Line service at the Gisborne Station will not be required to pay for a separate bus ticket.

Route 73 and 74 service details
New routes 73 and 74 replaced routes 473 and 474:
- Routes 73 and 74 are connected and travel in a two-way bus loop for most of the day.
- Routes 73 and 74 run to a timetable do not require pre-booking.
- Each route starts at Gisborne Station and ends at Willowbank Road/Brady Road.
- When the routes reach their destination, they continue on the loop as the opposite route instead of turning around.
- You don’t need to switch or change buses to continue on the loop.
- There are more bus services across the day and longer operating hours, with buses running every hour in both directions. Bus services also start earlier and finish later.
- The two-way public bus network replaced the Gisborne Town School Special, doubling the seats available during school travel time.
- An extension was introduced at the start and end of each school day for students who attend Holy Cross Primary School.
