Merlynston substation

We’re building a new substation at Merlynston Station to keep network operations running smoothly on the Upfield Line.

As demand for train services continues to grow, rail power and signalling needs to be upgraded to enable more trains to run.

By building the new substation, we’re protecting the electrical system that runs our trains and ensuring that the community has access to vital public transport.

The Merlynston substation will be located south of Merlynston Station within the grassed area on the western side of the track.

What is a substation?

Substations provide the power required to operate Melbourne’s trains and signalling equipment. They are common across the entire metropolitan network.

Substations do not generate power; they convert the local street power supply from power lines to the voltage required to run trains.

It is estimated that the substation will be built from late 2022 and commissioned by late 2023.
