Being a good commuter

A PTV unit where students consider different examples of social behaviour on public transport, such as not putting feet on seats, leaving access to doors, taking off backpacks when standing, offering your seat, not talking loudly, and explore the impacts of these behaviours on others.

Design dilemma

A PTV unit where students will develop awareness of the needs of diverse commuters on our public transport system. Their focus will be on how commuters can safely travel on public transport, especially with regard to getting on and off – boarding and alighting.

Students investigate the challenges involved in getting on and off transport for users with additional needs, for example commuters in wheelchairs. They identify the specific needs and relate these back to the safe use of public transport.

Friction

A PTV unit that explores the science behind using sand for braking for trains and trams, linking students’ experiences with forces and friction and extends to other examples. Examine students’ current conceptions and misconceptions and uses examples of road surfaces for students who are in areas without easy access to trains or trams.

How do you make a difference?

 

A PTV unit where students determine what changes they would like to see in public transport. They research who is responsible for that particular area, how decisions are made and how would they make a difference.

Students also review safety information from public transport authorities and create their own advice that targets primary school-aged children.

Sustainable travel

A PTV unit where students design and pitch ideas for an app that informs users of the cost associated with various forms of transport. The goal of the app is to give an indicator of the financial and environmental cost of different forms of transport to travel to the same location, building an understanding of the relatively cheaper cost and reduced environmental impact of utilising public transport options.

The ad campaign

A PTV unit where students identify and research a public transport safety issue. Using recent campaigns as models, they consider elements such as visual, emotive and figurative language, similes, humour, catchy music and themes and determine the key messages/elements of the campaign. Finally, they create a slogan and key messaging and use it in a persuasive text e.g. a billboard, a series of text messages, a television advertisement.

Welcome to Victoria!

A PTV unit where students create a tour pack for a day trip for a family of four who are visiting Victoria and wish to travel by public transport. Students use public transport sites to develop an itinerary that includes a visit to their local area (or if there is limited public transport in their area, to the nearest public transport point). The pack needs to include transport costs, maps and information about the sites they are promoting.
