How to use the PTV iPhone app

The latest version of the Public Transport Victoria iPhone app is available to download for free from the iTunes App store.

Finding a station, stop or address

From the Home Screen

When you first open the app, the default page (Home) displays nearby stops and stations and a list of stops, stations or journeys that have been added to favourites.

Favourite stops will display at the top of the screen with the next service arrival time.

Favourite journeys will allow one-tap journey planning for a saved journey.

The home page also displays nearby stops. Tap the Next 5 icon to display the next five services departing from the selected stop.

Real time information is shown in minutes, timetable information is shown as a clock.

From the Menu

Tap the menu icon on the top left of the screen next to the PTV icon.

From here you can directly search for an address, station, stop or route using the search bar at the top of the menu.

From the Map Screen

Tap the Map item in the menu to open the map. By default, this will display a map of the area around you, with stop and station locations indicated by pins. 

You can filter the pins that will appear by tapping the menu on the top right of the screen and selecting the transport modes that you'd prefer to display.

Select a stop and two options will appear at the bottom of the screen. You can either show the Next 5 trips from the chosen location, or plan a journey to this location.

Viewing your next departure

From the Home Screen

When the app is opened, the Home screen will display all nearby stations and stops by default.

Tapping the Next 5 icon on the right hand side of a station or stop will display the upcoming departures from that location.

Open the menu and tap the Next 5 item.

Enter the address, station, stop or route that you’d like to depart from in the search field, and select a match from the list of results that will appear.

If you search for a stop, the app will return a list of the closest matches based on your search.

If you search for a route, the app will return a list of stops on that route. Select the stop that you’d like to depart from.

If you search for a station, the app will return a list of services running from that station. Select the service that you’d like to use.

The app will display a list of upcoming departures for the selected stop or station.

Planning your journey

To plan a journey, open the menu, and tap the Plan Journey item.

Type the address, station or stop from which you are departing or leave the default option which will be your current location.

Next, enter the destination address, station or stop.

Below this is an item showing ‘Departing: Now’. If you tap ‘Now’ you will be able to choose to arrive or depart for your journey from a date and time in the future.

The ‘Departure’ and ‘Arrival’ fields can be reversed by tapping the arrows to the right of the search fields.

The app will return a list of journeys to get to your destination. Icons on the left show the modes of travel used, and departure and arrival times display the right hand side of the screen. Click the journey for more information.

A 'New Journeys' button will appear down the bottom of the screen if the displayed results are out of date.

You can edit the journey preferences by tapping the ‘Journey Preferences’ button in the top right hand corner of the screen. From this screen you can change the following:

  • Transfer method and time can be set.
  • Walking speed can be personalised.
  • Trip preferences can be set.
  • Preferred transport can be changed to add or omit transport modes in the journey.
  • Accessibility options can be toggled to only display accessible services or accessible stops on the planned journey.

You can save the settings on this page as your default preferences.

Setting reminders

When planning a journey, a reminder can be set so you don't miss your service.

The search results each have a ‘Set Reminder’ link below them. Click this link and you'll be taken to the set reminder screen. From here, you can set a reminder prior to the journey departure time.

Even if you lock your screen or exit the app, you will receive a push reminder to your phone to let you know it’s time to go.

Saving your favourite stations / stops / journeys

There are a few ways to save a stop, station or journey so they appear on your Home screen as favourites.

To favourite a Stop from Next 5

Search for and select a stop from the Next5 screen. Once selected, you’ll see a star icon near the top right of the screen. Tap this icon, and stars will appear next to each service. Select the services that you’d like to add to favourites, then tap ‘Done’.

To favourite a Journey from Journey Planner

Once you’ve planned a journey, you’ll see a star icon on the top right of the screen. Tap this icon and the journey – departure to destination – will appear on your Home screen.

Editing your favourites

To access your favourites, open the menu, and tap the Home item.

If you wish to change the order or delete the favourites, tap the ‘Edit’ button at the top right of the screen.

You can delete a favourite by tapping red ‘-‘ symbol on the left side of the screen and confirming the deletion.

You can also drag the favourite to a new position in the favourites list by pressing down on the list icon on the right side and dragging it up or down.

Tap 'Done' once you have finished editing your favourites.

Service disruption information

You can see live and upcoming disruptions by opening the menu and tapping the Disruptions item.

If a planned journey is affected by a disruption, an orange banner will appear across the top of the screen, along with an exclamation mark in an orange bubble within the journey.

Tap this orange section to display more detailed information about the disruption, as it may affect your journey.

Viewing Station Facilities

You can check the facilities available at Metro and V/Line stations by opening the menu, tapping the map item, and choosing a Metro or V/Line station.

The station name will appear down the bottom of the screen with a grey arrow at the top of the panel.

Drag the panel up to display detailed information about the facilities at the selected station, and drag down from the top to go back to the map.

  • Stairs
  • Tactile tiles.

Following your journey

While you are taking your journey, you can follow your progress on the map. This is particularly useful if you are taking a new journey as it will help you know where to alight.

Please note, you will need to have Location Services enabled on your phone for this to have optimal accuracy.

When using the Journey Planner, you can also tap the Map icon which will display a map route for your journey.

Transport maps

To view transport mode network maps, open the menu, and tap the Transport Maps item.  

Currently you can view:

  • Metropolitan train network
  • Weekend Night Train network
  • Tram network
  • Weekend Night Tram network
  • Weekend Night Bus network
  • Night Network city stops
  • Regional Train and Coach network
  • Weekend Night Coach.

Click on an item to download the mode map.

Planning a journey using Apple Maps

If you are using the Apple Maps function on your iPhone you can also plan your journey on public transport.

Within Apple Maps, find your current location or drop a pin for a specified location.

 Tap on the white box that appears and then tap on 'Directions to Here' or 'Directions from Here'.

Confirm the journey start and end locations and tap 'Route' on the top right of the screen to display the route.

Select 'Apps' from the three buttons at the top of the screen, and choose the PTV app from the list.

The PTV app will automatically take you to Journey Planner within the app and provide the pin location as your desired destination.

Using Siri

You can utilise Siri to access the PTV app.

Simply turn Siri on and say, for example, 'Public Transport to Richmond'.

Siri will open up Apple Maps with a journey to Richmond plotted. You can then select the PTV app from the list of apps to show the planned journey to Richmond.

Timetable and departure information

All arrival and departure information which is provided in a time format (eg. 10.08am) for metropolitan trains, metropolitan bus, regional V/Line trains, regional V/Line coaches and regional buses is scheduled timetable information.

Metropolitan train, tram and bus information shown in minutes (eg. 3 min) is real-time information.

Turning GPS (location services) on / off

In order to ensure your ‘Current location’ is always accurate, you will need to ensure that your GPS settings are turned on.

 To do this, you will need to go out of the app and into your Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

Make sure the button is ‘on’ next to Location Services.

Within the Privacy screen, scroll down to the PTV app and ensure that it is able to use the phone location.

The PTV app uses GPS information to find your location, so if there are any inaccuracies with your precise location – this is due to the GPS data – not the app.

Planning a Journey

To plan a journey, open the menu and tap on the Plan Journey item.

In the Plan Journey screen, select your departure location (by default, this is your current location) and your destination.

You can also edit your departure time from this screen. The default departure time is 'now'.

Setting a planned journey

The journey planner will return a list of journeys to your destination, along with departure / arrival times and icons showing the modes of travel used.

Searching for a Stop, Station or Address

To search for a location, open the menu and tap on the search field at the top of the screen.

As characters are entered into the search field, stop and location search results will appear below.

Select a result and you'll be presented with a list of the next services to depart from that stop or location.

Favourites

Disruptions will also appear on Journey Planner and Next 5 results. If a journey is affected by a disruption, you'll see an orange exclamation mark next to the icon of the affected mode.

Preferences

You can adjust your journey preferences by tapping the Preferences button on the top right of the Plan Journey screen.
