From Sunday 18 February 2018, routes 401, 402, 403, 505 and 546 are changing. Grattan Street will close between Royal Parade and Leicester Street while Parkville Station is built as part of the Metro Tunnel project. 

What’s changing?

  • New and improved timetables.
  • Changes to stops around the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Melbourne University.

  • Routes 401 and 403 will travel as one-way loop services.

  • Route 402 will run later on weekends, and more frequently on Sundays.

These changes will help us deliver more reliable buses more often while the new station is built.

Route 401 North Melbourne Station to Melbourne University

Route 401 will travel as a one-way loop service from North Melbourne Station to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Melbourne University, before returning to North Melbourne Station.

From Royal Melbourne Hospital

If you currently catch Route 401 from the Royal Melbourne Hospital on the south side of Grattan Street, you'll need to catch the bus on the north side of Grattan Street instead.

Getting to and from Melbourne University

The nearest stop to Melbourne University will be on Pelham Street. This stop replaces the stops on Grattan and Bouverie streets.

Route 402 Footscray Station to East Melbourne

Buses travelling from Footscray Station

From the Royal Melbourne Hospital buses will turn right onto Elizabeth Street, left onto Pelham Street, left onto Leicester Street, right onto Grattan Street before continuing their existing route.

Getting to Melbourne University

From 18 February, your nearest stop to Melbourne University will be on Pelham Street near Barry Street. 

From March 2018, a new stop will open on Grattan Street (east of Leicester Street), to make it easier to reach the university. 

Buses travelling from East Melbourne

Buses towards Footscray will travel via Grattan Street, Bouverie Street, Queensberry Street, Elizabeth Street and Flemington Road, before following their existing route via Wreckyn Street.

Melbourne University

Route 402 will stop on Bouverie Street adjacent to Lincoln Square.

Royal Melbourne Hospital

If you currently catch Route 402 from the Royal Melbourne Hospital on the south side of Grattan Street, you'll need to catch the bus from the new stop on Flemington Road near Wreckyn Street.

New timetables will see last bus departing East Melbourne at 10pm on weekends. Buses will run every 20 minutes on Sundays between 10am and 6pm.

Route 403 Footscray Station to Melbourne University

Route 403 will travel as a loop service in one direction from Footscray Station to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Melbourne University, before returning to Footscray Station.  

From Royal Melbourne Hospital

If you currently catch Route 403 from Royal Melbourne Hospital on the south side of Grattan Street, you will now need to catch the bus on the north side of Grattan Street.

Melbourne University

Your nearest stop to Melbourne University is on Pelham Street at University Square. This stop will replace the stop on Grattan Street.

Route 505 Moonee Ponds to Melbourne University

Route 505 will have a minor route change to travel along Pelham, Leicester, Queensberry and Elizabeth streets. Your bus stops won't change - the closest stops to Melbourne University will still be on Royal Parade or Pelham Street.

Route 546 Heidelberg Station to Melbourne University

Route 546 has a minor route change to travel along Pelham and Leicester streets instead of Grattan Street.

Getting to and from Melbourne University

From 18 February, your nearest stop to Melbourne University will be on Pelham Street. 

From March 2018, there will be a new stop on Grattan Street, east of Leicester Street, to make it easier to reach the university.  

Route 546 will also have a new timetable with revised running times, to provide a more reliable service for passengers.
