Welcoming you back safely

While you’ve been away, we’ve been working hard to make sure you can get back on your regular public transport services with confidence.

RideSpace is a free online tool that lets you see passenger volumes on trains, on individual platforms and at stations across the metropolitan train network.

This means you can choose when you want to travel, according to how busy the next service will be.

How busy is your train?

We’re now trialling RideSpace on eleven bus routes in metropolitan Melbourne, which means you will be able to see how busy your bus is in real-time on select routes.

The initial eleven trial routes are 190, 402, 404, 420, 431, 432, 471, 498, 552, 601 and 623. These are some of our most high-frequency and high-traffic routes, meaning we can gather as much data and user feedback as possible.

RideSpace features

Real-time and predicted occupancy

RideSpace displays four levels of capacity: Very Quiet, Quiet, Busy and Very Busy. It shows you how busy your station, your platform and your train (or bus) will be, and helps you decide which service to catch.

Improving our data quality

If you feel there’s a discrepancy between the information RideSpace is giving you and what you are seeing while on board, you can help us improve the data accuracy by using the ‘Is this occupancy correct?’ button. It automatically appears on your screen as your service moves along its journey.

Improving our data quality

If you feel there’s a discrepancy between the information RideSpace is giving you and what you are seeing while on board, you can help us improve the data accuracy by using the ‘Is this occupancy correct?’ button. It automatically appears on your screen as your service moves along its journey.

RideSpace’s accuracy will improve as we pull in more data over time.

The data we add daily will improve the predicted station and platform occupancy information up to 24 hours in advance, helping you plan when you’re most comfortable to travel. Train service occupancy predictions are available up until the end of the following day.

RideSpace data is available in Google Maps and we're also working on enabling RideSpace data sharing with other third party apps, so if you use their journey planning tools, you’ll soon be able to see occupancy information on your search.

This is phase one of RideSpace. We are currently investigating adding tram and regional train capacity data to RideSpace, and we're also investigating the integration of RideSpace into existing PTV channels.
