New online performance tool gives greater transparency

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) has launched a new interactive online tool to give the public a simple and more transparent way to access performance data on Victoria’s public transport network.

The launch of the new online tool coincides with the release of the latest performance results for January 2018 which show:

  • Metro delivered 92.3 per cent of services on-time in January.
  • Yarra Trams delivered  87.8 per cent of services on-time in January.
  • V/Line delivered 80.2 per cent of services on-time in January.

PTV CEO Jeroen Weimar said the new online tool gives the public more detail on operator performances reflecting its drive towards greater transparency under the new train and tram contracts.

“January saw the operators deal with the dual challenges of prolonged periods of hot weather and major upgrade works on our road and rail networks. Despite these challenges, both Yarra Trams and Metro managed to deliver service levels above the targets in the new franchise agreements.

“With detailed planning and close coordination across agencies and operators, we successfully ensured people could still access public transport to get them to their destination during as  important upgrade works were carried out across the network - with more than 900,000 trips taken on our replacement buses in January alone.”

Metro’s result of 92.3 per cent of train services running on time exceeded the new punctuality target which was raised from 88 per cent to 92 in their new contract, with 98.8 per cent reliability also above the new 98.5 per cent target.

Yarra Trams exceeded their punctuality and reliability targets whilst also delivering major track and infrastructure upgrades on Lygon Street and putting on extra services to get almost half a million people to and from the Australian Open.

Yarra Trams’ 87.8 per cent result was well above the 82 per cent threshold in the new franchise agreement and almost 10 per cent above the 77 per cent target in the previous contract.

On the regional network, V/Line services saw 80.2 per cent of services running on time across the network, with heat speed restrictions due to a prolonged hot spell, impacting punctuality across most lines.

“Steel tracks expand in the heat which make speed restrictions a reality of operating a rail network, whether in regional Victoria, or the London Underground,” said Mr Weimar.

“V/Line has been taking extra steps to minimise the impact of extreme heat days on services, deploying extra crews on hot days to speed up response times should incidents arise, and we continue to look at ways to further minimise disruptions for passengers.”
