November public transport performance results published

The Department of Transport today published public transport performance results for November 2019.
- Metro Trains recorded punctuality of 91.5 per cent, and reliability of 98.3 per cent
- Yarra Trams recorded punctuality of 79.6 per cent, and reliability of 97 per cent
- V/Line recorded punctuality of 89 per cent, and reliability of 97.2 per cent
Metro Trains’ punctuality result was an improvement on the previous month but fell short of the targets for both punctuality and reliability during a month that included a number of events across the city.
More than 1,000 extra services were delivered in November to carry more than 140,000 racegoers to the Melbourne Cup Carnival, including 42 per cent of crowds on Oaks Day – the busiest day on the network.
The most significant incident impacting Metro Trains’ performance was damaged overhead equipment at Newport station on Thursday 21 November. However, delays caused by people illegally entering tracks were reduced as new anti-trespasser ground panels were installed at five locations across the network.
Department of Transport Head of Transport Services Jeroen Weimar said despite a busy month, it was crucial that all operators met their performance targets.
“Metro Trains ran well during the Spring Racing Carnival, so it’s disappointing this performance was not sustained during the whole month,” he said. “We are working closely with Metro Trains to lift their overall daily performance and will continue to do so until our passengers get the consistent service they rightly expect.”
On the tram network, Yarra Trams’ November result for reliability was below the compensation threshold, meaning eligible passengers can apply for compensation. The punctuality result was also below their monthly target.
Factors impacting the tram network last month included four hours of industrial action on Thursday 28 November and tram stop accessibility upgrades on William Street, which saw disruptions to trams on William, Collins and Bourke streets.
“It’s frustrating that tram passengers have been forced to deal with four separate tram strikes in recent times,” said Mr Weimar. “I urge Yarra Trams and RTBU to now resolve their disagreements and come to a resolution in the interest of passengers.”
On the regional network, V/Line experienced improvements in both punctuality and reliability in November, meeting the reliability target but falling short of the target for punctuality.
There were sharp improvements in performance on Victoria’s busiest regional line with 95.1 per cent of Geelong line trains running on time and reliability on the line improving from 95.3 to 97.5 per cent.
Significant work was also delivered on the Ballarat Line Upgrade throughout November which led to the opening of a new station at Cobblebank and extra services for passengers on the Ballarat line.
“It’s good to see this ongoing improvement in performance across the V/Line network while work continues to upgrade infrastructure to meet the needs of regional passengers, now and into the future,” Mr Weimar said.
“There's an unprecedented amount of work happening to improve Victoria's transport network – the William Street tram stop upgrades and the opening of the new Cobblebank station are the latest examples of projects that have been delivered to make traveling easier for all Victorians.”
