Tram trial to start

26 Feb 2019

Trams could become more reliable thanks to a trial to give trams priority at traffic lights.

The trial will begin on Route 75 in March 2019 and aims to improve the efficiency of our trams and reduce congestion on our roads.

Melbourne’s tram network, the biggest in the world, is unique as more than 75 per cent of the network is on shared roads with other vehicles.

Improving the flow of trams at intersections will increase tram reliability and efficiency so you can get where you need to go, on time.

The Cooperative Intelligent Transport System (C-ITS) technology will be fitted to 25 trams on Route 75 which travels along Toorak Road and the Burwood Highway.

The trial is being coordinated by the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) in collaboration with Public Transport Victoria, VicRoads, Yarra Trams and La Trobe University.
