Spring construction blitz on roads and public transport
25 Aug 2019
Melbourne and Victoria are growing, and to keep people moving, we are expanding and modernising the transport network to make travel easier. That’s why we’re delivering important works on the rail network across Victoria this spring to prepare for the Metro Tunnel.
The Metro Tunnel will provide space on the rail network for over half a million extra trips to and from the suburbs during peak periods each week and reduce travel times by up to 50 minutes a day. It will also help take cars off our busy roads.
Across late September and October, buses will replace trains at various times on the Cranbourne and Pakenham, Sunbury, Werribee and Williamstown lines. At various times, trams on St Kilda Road and Plenty Road will also be replaced by buses and trams on Flinders Street will not run between Elizabeth Street and Russell Street.
On the regional train network, coaches will replace trains on parts of the Ballarat, Bendigo, Gippsland, Geelong and Warrnambool lines.
Gippsland passengers who have been most impacted by upgrades along Melbourne’s busiest train line will again receive free travel during this time.
There will be a range of other smaller disruptions for essential maintenance works across the network, plan ahead before you travel.
We encourage you to plan ahead to avoid long delays, allow more time for your journey and consider alternatives if you can during the works. Please be aware there may also be more people using the roads, or an alternative line or route, if their usual journey is disrupted. For travel tips, see Tips to help you plan ahead during the spring construction blitz.
