Primary and secondary school students aged 5 to 18 can travel on a Child myki

If you're aged 17 and 18 you must carry proof of age ID (such as a passport, learner permit, driver licence, Proof of Age card, Key Pass), or proof of another concession entitlement (such as a Health Care Card, a PTV School Student ID or PTV Approved School Student ID).

School students can also purchase a half or full year student pass in their chosen area and must also carry a PTV Approved School Student ID card or PTV School Student ID card.

Benefit

A student pass gives you unlimited travel on all train, tram and bus services within your chosen zones until the expiry of the pass.

Who's eligible for a student pass?

You can apply for a student pass if you're:

  • a full time primary or secondary student living in Victoria
  • a full time student at a Victorian primary or secondary school
  • a primary or secondary student approved by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority to be home-schooled
  • a full time VCE, VCAL, or Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) student studying at a university or TAFE that is listed on the PTV website

What student passes are available?

Different passes are available depending on where you live or wish to travel.

Victorian Student Pass

The Victorian Student Pass gives you unlimited travel on all public transport operating wholly within Victoria. The pass is a myki card.

To get this pass, you must have a PTV Approved School Student ID card or a PTV School Student ID card. You need to carry your Student Pass and ID when travelling.

Regional Student Pass

The Regional Student Pass gives you unlimited travel on buses and V/Line train services within the zones you choose. Passes for Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo are mykis. Passes for Colac, Portland and Southwest bus networks are paper tickets.

To get this pass, you must have a PTV Approved School Student ID card or a PTV School Student ID. You need to carry your Student Pass and ID when travelling.

How do I get a Student Pass?

You can get a Student Pass two ways:

1) Using a PTV Approved School Student ID card

For schools that choose to participate, this new, flexible option means that students no longer need to arrange, pay for and carry the dedicated PTV School Student ID to travel on student passes or concession fares.

Schools that wish to offer this option to their students will need to ensure their school ID cards meet PTV’s fraud prevention requirements and be approved by PTV for use.

Students need to carry this card when they travel. They’ll need it as proof of entitlement to access concession fares or to buy a student pass.

Information for schools about how to join up can be found at Information for Schools.

To purchase a Student Pass just show the PTV Approved School Student ID card at a staffed station or bus operator selling paper student passes. Please also download the Student Pass Sales Form (PDF) 280 KB , fill in the contact details and bring it with you when purchasing your Student Pass — this allows the student to visit the issuing station to obtain a replacement Student Pass if it is lost or stolen.

If a student pass has been lost, it can only be replaced when the PTV Approved School Student ID is shown. If this has also been lost, a replacement school ID card is required before the student pass will be replaced.

It is strongly recommended that students register their myki Student Pass to protect this high-value product and to be eligible for a replacement if it is lost or stolen.

2) Applying for a PTV School Student ID/Pass

The existing PTV School Student ID and student pass process is still available if your school doesn’t offer a PTV Approved School Student ID card.

The PTV School Student ID card costs $9 and is valid until the expiry of the pass.
