iUSEpass for students

I am an international student, can I travel on public transport for a discounted fare?

Yes. As part of a three year trial which commenced in 2015, eligible international students studying at participating institutions are able to purchase a discounted annual myki pass called an iUSEpass.

How do I know if I am eligible?

To be eligible you need to be studying full-time at an institution participating in the iUSEpass program and doing one of the following courses:

  • Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma
  • Associate Degree
  • Bachelor Degree

Click here for a list of participating institutions.

Please note: International Exchange Students, students with Refugee status and recipients of Australian Awards Scholarships are already eligible for discounted concession travel. The iUSEpass does not apply to these students.

How much will I save?

iUSEpass myki cards are 50 per cent cheaper than a regular, annual myki pass.

The pass can be used on all Public Transport Victoria (PTV) trains, trams and buses in the myki zone/s in which your education institution is located.

Purchasing a Zone 1 + 2 yearly iUSEpass in 2017 will save you $799.50 on a yearly myki pass and may save you more in the long term if you have been travelling regularly and topping up your myki when required.

Use the iUSEpass Fare Calculator to work out how much you are spending now and find out how much you will save with an iUSEpass.

I don't currently purchase an annual myki pass, is the iUSEpass still worth it for me?

The iUSEpass is great value for most international students. If you work, live and go out around your education institution, the iUSEpass lets you travel as much as you like for a 50 per cent discount on a regular annual myki pass.

You can explore and travel further by adding myki money, but the one-time fee is a great option to cover your routine travel in the area around your institute. If you study in metropolitan Melbourne, the zone/s your iUSEpass is valid in will likely include all of your routine travel. An iUSEpass is often much cheaper in the long run than topping up your myki as you need it.

As a comparison, a daily Zone 1 + 2 full fare costs $8.20 on myki money.

Use the iUSEpass Fare Calculator to work out how much you are spending now and find out how much you will save with an iUSEpass.

I want to travel outside the valid zones on my iUSEpass, is this affordable?

To travel outside the valid zones on your iUSEpass, you will need to add myki money to your card to travel with a valid ticket as you would with a normal myki pass or myki money card.

If you live and study in metropolitan Melbourne, a Zone 1+2 iUSEpass will likely include all of your routine travel within Melbourne, but adding myki money means you can travel outside of Melbourne and experience regional attractions like the Great Ocean Road, Ballarat Goldfields and beyond.

When does my pass expire?

Your pass is valid for 365 days from the date you first touch on. This means that you can purchase an iUSE pass at any time throughout the year, and you will still receive a full year of value from your pass.
