Group travel

Benefit

A group travel ticket allows groups of 12 or more people to travel together at a concession rate on metropolitan and regional services.

Metropolitan and/or myki regional buses

A Prepaid Travel Authority allows groups of 12 or more to travel together at a concession rate.

Eligibility

  • Groups must be made up of 12 or more people (maximum of 35 on trams and 25 on buses).
  • All members of the group must travel together at all times, getting on and off at the same locations.
  • No refund is given should the trip be cancelled or the number of travellers be less than paid for.
  • Group travel isn't available on the Night Network.
  • The Prepaid Travel Authority is available for 2 hour and daily fares.

Conditions of travel

  • Travel must be on metropolitan and/or myki regional buses.

Buying a Prepaid Travel Authority

Tickets are available from staffed railway stations or from a PTV Hub. This is a paper ticket and not a myki card.

Regional and V/Line services

V/Line Group Travel tickets allow a group of 12 or more people to travel together at the concession rate.

Eligibility

  • Groups must be made up of 12 or more people.
  • All members of the group must travel together at all times, getting on and off at the same locations.
  • Group travel discounts are available for Single, Day Return, Off-peak Single, and Off-peak Day Return tickets. The fare charged for the group is the concession fare of the selected ticket type multiplied by the number of customers.

Conditions of travel

The conditions of these tickets are the same as those for the selected ticket type. During peak hours, we may not be able to accommodate groups. 

Buying a V/Line Group Travel ticket

  • Groups of 12 or more, on V/Line coaches, must be arranged at least seven days in advance by calling the V/Line Group Travel Coordinator on (03) 9619 2338.
  • Groups of 12 to 19, travelling on V/Line trains only, can buy tickets from any V/Line ticket sales outlet (subject to availability).
  • Groups of 20 or more, on V/Line trains, must be arranged at least seven days in advance by calling the V/Line Group Travel Coordinator on (03) 9619 2338
  • The fare charged for the group is the concession fare for the selected zone(s) multiplied by the number of people travelling.

Free travel for primary school groups

From 1 January 2018, primary school groups can travel free on off-peak trains, trams and buses. For more information see, Free travel for primary school groups.
