How to touch on and off

If you're using a myki card, touch your myki to the centre of the reader. Hold still and listen for the beep. A green light shows on the reader when you've successfully touched on or off.

If you're using a smartphone with a Mobile myki, wake up your phone and hover it about 1cm above the reader. Hold still and listen for the beep. A green light shows on the reader, and a tick will appear on your phone screen when you've successfully touched on or off.

Trains

Touch on before getting on the train and touch off when you exit the station. If you're changing trains at a station you don't need to touch off and on again, unless transferring through a myki barrier gate.

Buses

Remember to touch on and off.

If you use myki Money and don't touch off, you'll be charged a default 2 hour fare for metropolitan Melbourne.

Trams

If you're travelling in Zone 1+2, remember to touch on. You don’t need to touch off.

If you're just travelling in the city's Free Tram Zone, don't touch on or off.

If you’re just travelling in Zone 2, touch on and off for a cheaper fare.

V/Line commuter service trains

Touch on before getting on the train and touch off when you exit the station.

Forgot to touch off?

If you don't touch off on a V/Line commuter service you'll be charged a default 2 hour peak fare between the zone of touch on and Zone 1. When the conductor checks your myki, they'll set the default fare to the end of the line you're travelling on.

If you're a V/Line passenger, you need to touch off after every journey otherwise you'll pay a default fare. This may be a higher cost than your journey.

Change of mind

If you touch on at a train station but decide not to travel, touch off within 15 minutes and you won't be charged. There's no change of mind period on trams or buses.
