Buy a regional (V/Line) paper ticket

It's best to buy a V/Line paper ticket before boarding a V/Line train.

If you board at an unstaffed V/Line station or from a roadside coach stop, you can buy a ticket from the train conductor or coach driver. V/Line paper tickets may be checked before, during or after your journey.

If you travel on metropolitan or regional services to connect with a V/Line service and do not have your V/Line paper ticket at the start of your journey, you must buy the appropriate ticket for your connecting service.

Some services require a reservation prior to boarding, please see below for further information.

Reservations

Reservations are required on all services travelling to or from Warrnambool, Swan Hill, Shepparton, Albury / Wodonga and Bairnsdale, even if you intend to get off the train before it finishes at its destination.

Reservations are not required on trains travelling to or from all other destinations including Marshall, Ararat, Ballarat, Bendigo, Echuca, Seymour and Traralgon.

To check if your service is reserved:

  • on a V/Line timetable, look for the 'R' symbol.
  • using the journey planner, look for ‘reservations required’ in the travel plan.

Restriction reservations

Some services on the Swan Hill, Warrnambool and Shepparton lines have a restriction reservation that means you can only make a reservation less than 24 hours before departure.

This is to ensure sufficient room for customers on less frequent long distance services.

If you are travelling short distances on long distance services, you are encouraged to catch an alternative short distant service as these run more frequently.

The following services require reservations less than 24 hours prior to travelling between the stations listed:
