Group travel

​If you're travelling in a group of 12 or more, you can get a concession discount with a Prepaid Travel Authority or V/Line Group Travel ticket.

Prepaid Travel Authority

Groups of 12 or more can travel together at a discounted rate on metropolitan trains, trams and buses, and myki regional town buses.

Details

  • Your group can include up to 35 people on trams and 25 on buses.
  • The entire group must travel together and get on and off at the same stations or stops.
  • A Prepaid Travel Authority is available for 2 hour and daily myki Money fares.
  • You'll be charged the concession fare for zones you'll be travelling in, multiplied by the number of people in your group. Concession fares are 50 per cent of a full fare.
  • Group travel isn't available on Night Network.
  • There are no refunds if your trip is cancelled or fewer people travel than you paid for.

Buying a Prepaid Travel Authority

You can buy tickets at staffed stations or the PTV Hub (750 Collins Street only). This is a paper ticket, not a myki.

V/Line Group Travel

Groups of 12 or more can travel together at a discounted rate on regional V/Line trains and coaches.

Details

  • Your entire group must travel together and get on and off at the same stations or stops.
  • Group travel discounts are available for Single, Day Return, Off-peak Single, and Off-peak Day Return tickets.
  • The same conditions that apply to your usual Single, Day Return, Off-peak Single, and Off-peak Day Return ticket apply to your V/Line Group Travel ticket.
  • You'll be charged the concession fare for zones you'll be travelling in, multiplied by the number of people in your group. Concession fares are 50 per cent of a full fare.
  • We may not have room for groups during peak times (weekdays before 9am or between 4pm and 6pm).

Buying a V/Line Group Travel ticket

If you’re travelling on a regional train in a group of 12 to 19, you can only buy tickets from V/Line ticket outlets.

If you're travelling on a regional train in a group of 20 or more, complete an online group travel application.

If you're travelling on a coach service, complete an online group travel application.

You must book at least seven days in advance if you're travelling on:

  • a regional coach in a group of 12 or more
  • a regional train in a group of 20 or more.

Victorian primary school groups

Primary school excursion groups of 12 to 35 people* travel for free as a group, when the entire journey on a school day is between 9.30am and 3.30pm, or after 6pm (on V/Line) or 7pm (metropolitan services). On weekends, the journey can be any time.

The group must be made up of primary school children and up to six accompanying adults.

The group must carry a Travel Authority and travel together at all times.
