Travel Pass

1-Day, 7-Day and 30-Day Travel Passes helping vulnerable Victorians stay connected

Travel Pass tickets are making it possible for disadvantaged Victorians to use public transport to access vital services and to actively engage with the community.

Travel Pass tickets—available as 1-Day, 7-Day and 30-Day tickets—are sold by Department of Transport and Planning to approved community service organisations and education providers who issue them to their clients and students free of charge. Education providers must be authorised to do so by the Head, Transport for Victoria.

Using the Travel Pass

Travel Pass can be used on all PTV contracted services throughout Victoria:

  • bus, train and tram trips in metropolitan Melbourne (Zone 1 and 2);
  • all regional town buses;
  • PTV inter-town buses;
  • V/Line coaches; and
  • V/Line trains.

This allows disadvantaged Victorians who experience a crisis or special circumstances, no matter where they live, can use public transport to access critical support services in their local area.

Note: Previous versions of the Travel Pass (with 2023 expiry dates) with terms and conditions stating Zone 1 and 2 validity only are now valid for travel throughout Victoria.

Free 30-Day Travel Passes for students in crisis

Victorian students who are currently experiencing crisis can access a free 30-day Travel Pass as part of the Travel Pass program to ensure they can continue to attend school by using public transport.

The program was recently expanded to include caregivers of eligible students, ensuring that they can accompany a student on their journey.

Students’ eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis by their school and the passes can be used across Victoria’s public transport network.

Students should contact their school to discuss access to a Travel Pass.

Approved community service organisations and education providers can issue Travel Pass tickets for free at their discretion to their clients and students for many reasons, such as travelling to:

  • a medical or rehabilitation appointment
  • a counselling session
  • temporary or crisis accommodation; or
  • attending education where financial or special circumstances exist.

Community service organisations and education providers wishing to become approved Travel Pass issuers should email [email protected] for more information.

Employees and representatives of approved Travel Pass issuing organisations cannot use Travel Pass and must use a myki or appropriate local tickets for travel.

Once approved, organisations will be given access to an online portal to order Travel Passes.

30-Day Travel Passes are available to all Victorian Government schools at no cost to support students in crisis.

Schools can provide a Travel Pass to primary and secondary students who are experiencing a crisis, such as family violence or sudden financial hardship, to ensure that they can continue to attend school, receive an education, participate in school activities, and access support services.

Where the eligible student requires an adult to accompany them on public transport to school (for example, due to young age, disability or mental health), the student is eligible for an additional Travel Pass for their caregiver to travel with them.

If a student requires access to a government-funded School Bus Program service, the school should contact the Department of Education on (03) 7022 2247 or via email [email protected] before issuing the student with a 30-Day Travel Pass.

The distribution of the Travel Passes to students in crisis is managed by State Schools’ Relief (SSR) in consultation with schools.

Government schools wanting to access Travel Passes should apply to SSR via their online portal and for more information contact State Schools' Relief on 03 8769 8400 or email [email protected].

30-Day Travel Passes are available to low-fee non-government schools at no cost to support students in crisis.
