How to instantly top up myki Money on the PTV app
You can now top up your myki Money balance instantly using the PTV app on your mobile phone anytime, anywhere.
With this new way to pay on the go, you can simply hold your myki smartcard on the back of your mobile phone and top up your myki Money instantly.
You can chose to complete an anonymous top up or logged in to your myki account.
This technology uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to allow people to top up their myki using their mobile phone.
To be able to top up your myki Money instantly, your will need to have:
- Your phone must have an NFC chip
- Android phones must be using operating system 8 or higher
- iPhones must be using iOS operating system 13 or higher
- Your phone must be connected to mobile data or WiFi
- Your myki smartcard must be physically present with the phone
- You must have the latest version of the PTV app
You can check if your phone has an NFC chip and the operating system in your phone's 'Settings'.
How to top up using NFC – anonymous top up
Open the PTV app, select the 'myki top up' option and tap the 'scan myki' icon.
When the ‘Scan myki to begin’ prompt appears, hold your myki smartcard to the back of your phone.
If your myki card scan was unsuccessful, you will receive a prompt to try again. You may need to try moving your myki to different areas on the back of the phone to ‘find’ the NFC chip (we recommend placing your myki 1-2 centimetres away from the phone and holding for 5-10 seconds). You should also check your phone is compatible and you have a mobile data or Wifi connection.
If your scan was successful, a large tick will appear on the screen and you will see your myki card details. To proceed with the top up, tap the 'Top up' icon next to myki Money and then:
- Select the top up amount ($10, $20, $50 or other - a whole dollar amount between $1 and $250)
- Enter your card payment details (payment card number, payment card expiry date and payment card CVC/CVV)
- Tap the 'Proceed with $xx' button
A screen with your top up amount, myki card number and card payment details will display for you to review. Tap the 'Pay $xx now' to proceed with the top up.
When the ‘Hold myki to the back of your phone to top up instantly’ prompt appears, hold your myki smartcard to back of phone. If you'd like to cancel the top up at this point, tap the ‘Cancel top up’ button and you'll receive a prompt to confirm.
If your top up is successful, you'll see a 'scan successful' message followed by a top up confirmation screen. You can save the confirmation screen as an image or an attachment by tapping the 'share' icon in the top right-hand corner. The green ‘Return to myki’ button will return you to your myki account overview.
Please note that your actual balance may take some time to update in the app. To check actual balance, just scan your myki.
How to top up using NFC – logged in to your myki account
Open the PTV app and log in to your myki account. Select the myki you'd like to top up and tap the 'Top up' icon next to the myki Money balance.
When the ‘Scan myki to check actual balance and instant top up’ prompt appears, select 'Scan' and then hold your myki smartcard to back of phone.
If your myki card scan was unsuccessful, you will receive a prompt to try again. You may need to try moving your myki to different areas on the back of the phone to ‘find’ the NFC chip. You should also check you phone is compatible and you have a mobile data or Wifi connection.
